This event will be led by Graham Hunt, John Shiel, Mike Belfield & Grant Rickey.

They will work with NEV members who are interested in applying for the role of Sustainable Design Appraiser as set out in NEV's Community Management Statement.

The workshop will provide an understanding of the role and it responsibilities and also provide training to members interested in becoming an Appraiser.

It will also examine in detail NEV's Design Assessment Scoresheet including mandatory and optional components of the scoresheet and the application of bonus points within the design assessment process

Our Design Approval Pathway will also be presented in detail including its requirements to serve the vision, mission and aim of the ecovillage, focusing on the community building aspects of site appraisal, design development and construction, central to which is the ability to work collaboratively with neighbours and neighbourhoods.

The workshop will have a tutorial on completing a worked example of the scoresheet, and those wishing to become Appraisers can take home a case study to complete.

Topics include:

  • The Role & Responsibilities of a Sustainable Design Appraiser.
  • Detail Review of NEV Design Assessment Scoresheet
  • How is it Completed
  • How is it Assessed
  • Where does it fit into the NEV Building Approval Process!

By way of background, SBRC is a multi-disciplinary research centre that addresses the challenge of making buildings sustainable through independent research and a wide range of industry collaborations. The centre It is located in an elegantly designed 6 Star Green Star facility (Education Design v1 accredited). Designed by architects Cox Richardson, the building was constructed with the target of becoming the first Living Building Challenge certified building in Australia. https://sbrc.uow.edu.au/index.html

The University of Wollongong teamed up with TAFE Illawarra under the auspices of the SBRC to form ‘Team UOW’ in the Solar Decathlon China 2013. They were the first team from Australia to gain entry into a Solar Decathlon, and took a unique approach to the competition by being the first team in the history of the competition to demonstrate how to retrofit an existing home. And they won! The Illawarra Flame House as their winning entry is called is now located in its permanent position at the University of Wollongong Innovation Campus. It is located opposite the SBC is part of the University’s longer term Sustainability Street project. The guided tour through the Illawarra Flame House will allow tour participants to question sustainable design solution for light framed housing. https://sbrc.uow.edu.au/news/UOW157974.html
